Evesham's July Feel Good Newsletter

Welcome to the July Edition of the Evesham Noticeboard Newsletter!!!

Well what a busy month June was for lil old Evesham, this June we have seen the Wartime in the Vale, The Morris Dancing Festival, The Food Festival, the start of the Evesham Festival of Words and more.  And that's not all, there have been many village events too! Including all the River Avon activities and Bands in the Park every weekend.

Soon we will know who our next MP is, we hope that they do the job well, listen to our community, and attend some of the parish council meetings - listen to the residents and business owners from the shop floor as they say! But as always our community Facebook Group stays out of politics and we hope you have enjoyed the political free group during the last few weeks! Below is a collection of party-free, political free, happy good news posts!   Big shout out to all the members that help make this happen.

Here are some of the top posts from our group in Evesham Noticeboard and some of our favourites!

Our local creative yarn bomber only went and made the most awesome one to date - the mermaid! The photo below of the topper on Cheltenham Road became the BBC Hereford and Worcester "Pic of the Week" and was sent in by another local hero, Laura Van Toller. Thanks Laura you got Evesham on the news!!!

John Campbell-Muir meets the High Sheriff of Worcester for his good work!

Local councillor John Campbell-Muir is dedicated to "training for the future". In his spare time John, and his hard-working team of lads, have been out and about, making improvements to our High Street, and I think you will agree it looks a lot better. The project equips his team with new skills and work experience to help improve their future employment prospects.

John said “I was working on benches and Robbie the Mayor, brought the high sheriff of Worcester to see our work and talk about what I was trying to do with setting up "Training the Future" as an academy. What a smashing gentleman, really enjoyed our talk!”

John explained “I started "Training the Future" 7 years ago and am trying to secure funding to do my assessor qualification so I can open a school based in our Orchards for kids with learning difficulties. Through the scheme, we hope to equip them with life skills and qualifications to help them on the road to employment. I firmly believe, that most of the problems we face in our society are down to the lack of help and training to the 20% that are failed by the education system each year. In my recent research, I found out 55% of prisoners have learning difficulties and a reading age of 11. I am loud and won’t go away and won’t be bullied. I am a true working-class bloke, that tries to help, where I can"

Well done John and your team for making our benches and street furniture look great again. If you would like to know more or support John's work please do get in touch with him directly on Facebook.

Balloons Take Flight Over Evesham

Early on the first of June, Evesham residents were surprised with a wonderful display of over 20 hot air balloons passing over the town.

The balloons took flight from Ragley Hall where the annual Midlands Air Festival was taking place.

It was a beautiful sight with so many hot air balloons of different colours, shapes and designs.

We were very fortunate that day that the wind was blowing in the right direction so that we could witness such an impressive display!

Mayor's Corner

June has been a month of new beginnings and thanksgivings…

The Mayoress and I launched into June with an invitation to visit The Evesham Polish Festival, celebrating Polish Heritage Days, to see their exhibits and taste their fabulous food.  The Polish community really are a blessing to Evesham and it was a pleasure to experience their hospitality and culture.

Early in the month we were very proud to host a gathering of neighbouring Mayors and Chairmen from across Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Warwickshire.  All councils work to the same municipal calendar, beginning and ending in May, so it was really nice to meet our counterparts from across the area who, like us have just started their year.  It’s great to compare notes about how our councils work and share ideas.

The D-Day Commemorations were marked by a short service at Broadway Tower, a further service at Evesham War memorial, the D-Day Proclamation being released on social media and a very last minute beacon lighting thanks to John Campbell-Muir and Sharon Hemming, who put the event together at the last minute when they realised the traditional Evesham beacon was not being lit.

Also this month we visited the new nursery at Bengeworth School, The Tracey Sollis Leukemia Research Shop which reopened after a devastating flood, Evesham’s new Baptist Church in Offenham Road and The Blue Lagoon Indian Restaurant which has recently changed hands.  The new owners are keen to become part of the Evesham Community and we wish them well with their new venture.

This month we were very proud to host the High Sheriff of Worcestershire, Mr Charles Moyle JP who spent a full day in Evesham visiting local charities.  We took him to the Evesham Adventure Playground Association, Evesham Volunteer Centre, John Martin Charity, Caring Hands in the Vale’s Lighthouse project, You Turn Youth Club, Wallace House Community Centre, Training the Future and The Almonry Museum… there was so much more we could have shown him but we only had a limited amount of time and he was keen to see charities and organisations who were making a difference for those in need.

June closed with a fabulous Quiz Night at Hampton Working Mens Club raising £655 for the Mayor’s Charity Appeal and an invasion of Morris Dancers who took over Evesham during the National Morris Weekend.

The month ended with a visit from the Mayor of Evesham!!!  Not the mayor you know and not the Evesham you know…. Jackie Veasey is Mayor of Evesham in New Jersey and, while holidaying in the UK decided to take a look around ‘the original’ Evesham.  It was a pleasure to meet her and show her and her family around our council chamber and our beautiful town. Talking of which… credit where its due, Wychavon have almost completed the annual jet-washing of the streets and The Town Council’s ‘green team’ work on the Almonry gardens is an absolute delight.  A very special thank you to Sue Ablett, who has weeded around the base of the Bell Tower, community work at its best.

Robert Raphael

Mayor of Evesham

Popular Food Festival Returns to Evesham

The first weekend of June saw the return of the popular Evesham Food and Drink festival.

The three-day festival saw Evesham play host to a selection of local food and drink vendors from all across Worcestershire including members Hentony Gin, Thermomix, Pud Puds, and Claus for a Cause

Families enjoyed a variety of food and drink whilst listening to live music by local bands in the sunshine. Fun fair rides and stalls were also available for the younger members of the community.

The festival is one of Evesham's longest-running festivals and is incredibly popular attracting between 10000 and 12000 visitors per year.

New this year was the addition of Disney princesses and superhero characters. Children had the opportunity to get their photos taken with their favourite Disney character and to listen to a 30-minute live music set consisting of Disney Songs.

MBE for Vale Wildlife founder Caroline

A huge congratulations to Caroline Gould, founder of Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre who has recently been awarded an MBE for her services to Wildlife Rehabilitation over the last 40 years.

She has achieved so much in that time helping the local wildlife population by providing medical care and rehabilitation to wildlife casualties - really making a difference to the wildlife in and around the Vale and beyond.

A massive well done to Caroline for this well-deserved honour and for all she has done to inspire others, she is a true local hero.

Caroline made the following statement on the Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre Facebook page:

"I want to say a huge thank you for all the love and congratulations I’ve received today for my MBE award. I’ve been overwhelmed by your kindness and special words which mean the world to me - thank you all.

I have loved my 40 years of wildlife rehabilitation, I still look forward to going in every day (although not so keen on so many hours now ) and I still feel privileged to be able to work so closely with our beautiful wildlife.

I am honoured to accept my MBE but not just for me but for every member of staff, volunteer, trustee, fundraiser, member and donator who have, over 40 years, helped to get Vale Wildlife Hospital to where it is today - we wouldn’t be here at all without you."

If you'd like to find out more about Vale Wildlife please visit their website and come to their open day this month on 7th July to celebrate their 40th anniversary.

Wartime in the Vale

Evesham transformed into a time capsule in June, buzzing with the sights and sounds of World War II at the renowned Wartime in the Vale event at Ashdown Camp. This annual gathering, a heavyweight among WWII military vehicle and re-enactment events, offered a captivating historical experience for everyone.

Over 2,000 passionate re-enactors, portraying both soldiers and everyday citizens, brought the era to life. Visitors were transported back in time as they explored authentic camps, witnessed thrilling battle demonstrations, and interacted with knowledgeable re-enactors eager to share their love for history.

The star of the show? An impressive display of military vehicles! From iconic tanks to zippy motorcycles and rugged jeeps, these meticulously restored machines offered a tangible connection to the past. But Wartime in the Vale wasn't just about military might. It also paid tribute to the civilians who played a vital role during the war effort. Visitors explored displays dedicated to life on the home front, complete with fascinating demonstrations of traditional crafts and skills.

Live 1940s entertainment transported attendees even further back in time, with music and dance straight out of a bygone era. Vintage clothing stalls completed the immersive experience, allowing visitors to truly dress the part.

Wartime in the Vale is more than just an event; it's a fantastic educational experience for families. It fosters a connection with history through interactive activities, serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of remembering the past and honoring the bravery of those who fought for our freedom.

The Farm Animal Sanctuary

In this month's charity spotlight feature, we speak to Louise Stuart, manager of The Farm Animal Sanctuary, to find out a little bit more about the work they are carrying out to help animals in our community.

Established over 30 years ago, The Farm Animal Sanctuary was the first of its kind in this country. The purpose of the charity is to provide a safe haven for neglected and abused farm animals where they can live out the rest of their lives in comfort while receiving the special care and attention they need.

The charity was founded by Jan Taylor, after she witnessed the horrific reality of livestock markets around the country selling sick, malnourished, and frightened animals that were facing certain death or a lifetime of misery. Today they have over 600 happy residents, including sheep, cattle, pigs, ponies and horses, cats, dogs, ducks, geese, hens and cockerels, turkeys and alpacas!

But looking after all of these animals does come at a cost. It costs £2500 per week to provide proper care for the animals and the charity is dependant on its fundraising efforts to cover those costs. And the costs don't end there either. The Farm Animal Sanctuary has been offered the opportunity to buy Manor Orchard Farm and they need to do this urgently. The farm is on the market now and if a suitable offer is made by someone else we might miss our chance.

If the farm is bought by someone else, the farm animal sanctuary will have to move but to move so many animals,  many of which are older would be incredibly stressful for them. The charity would be forced to euthanase many of the animals for welfare reasons and on veterinary advice. And that's not their only problem - if they can't find the funds, it will be very difficult to find a home suitable for this number of mixed farm animals. The charity has been based at Manor Orchard Farm for 30 Years. In that time we have made a lot of improvements to make life even more comfortable for our animals, creating new paddocks, purchasing stables, field shelters, a new barn, hard standing in handling areas and pig paddocks, grassland improvement, and many more. Even if they find a new home, it will take a lot of work to provide the same level of comfort to the animals

To avoid moving, they have no choice. They simply must raise £944,000 and buy the farm outright so they can continue to provide a safe haven for their animals. It may seem like an impossible sum, but it is do-able and the charity needs your help.

There are so many ways that you can get involved and help raise money: sponsorship, farm visits, donations, adopt an animal or attending one of their events. Their next event (see poster below) is the Freedom Fields Festival on 6th - 7th July. They are also hosting two "sheepover" events on July 27th & 28th and August 24th & 25th where you can bring a tent and spend a night at the sanctuary with their rescued animals.

Later this year, the sanctuary is holding an open weekend during the 14th and 15th September where you can come visit and find out more about the work they do. There will also be a Spooky Sanctuary event on 26th October and then a Christmas Festive Fair on 23rd November. They really do offer events for everyone!!!

The Farm Animal Sanctuary needs your help to raise the funds they need to buy Manor Orchard Farm. You can get involved by donating, attending events, sponsoring their animals or holding your own events and sponsored activities.

Morris Dancing Festival Comes to Evesham

The Vale of Evesham Morris Festival took place over the weekend of 21st - 23rd June bringing dancers and their sticks from all over the country.

The festival is in its 21st year and celebrates England's traditional form of dance. During the weekend over 500 dancers descended on Evesham to dance various genres of morris dancing.

Folk music and dancing could be seen in many locations throughout Evesham and the vale including the Market Place (pictured above), town centre streets and the Abbey Park Gardens. Many of Evesham's businesses also got involved with Evesham Rowing Club, the Red Lion and the Fleece Inn, Bretforton all hosting events over the weekend.

The festivities culminated in a procession on the Sunday through Evesham’s Abbey Park, along Bridge Street to Market Place where the Mayor presented the Evesham Stick to the "side" which best-demonstrated the ‘spirit of the morris’. For 2024, this was presented to Liberty Hill.

Well done to Liberty Hill, and congratulations to the organisers for arranging such a fantastic weekend!
