Hello and Welcome to August!!!
The summer holidays are well and truly upon us, and whilst we may not have the weather we would like, there are plenty of things to look forward to in the coming weeks.
At the same time, we know that the rising cost of living is affecting us all, so in this month’s newsletter, we’ve put together some ideas on how you can save money this summer.
Here's what you can look forward to:
- Where families can eat for less in the Vale
- What's on in Evesham this month
- A guide to all the best playgrounds in Evesham that the kids will love.
- See what Evesham businesses have been upto this month
As always we also cast our bright spotlight on a local business and community group or charity and we'll introduce you to our newest members.
So sit back with a drink of your choice, kick off those shoes and read on.
Dowdeswell Bar
Business Spotlight
In this month's newsletter, we shine a spotlight on the local business Dowdeswell Bar. The bar started a few years ago when its owners Lisa and Peter Dowdeswell, were planning shows but were struggling to book a bar for an event they were doing so they ended up setting up their own.
Four years on and Dowdeswell Bar is as busy as ever having continued to grow. During Covid, the business diversified by offering hampers which were well received by their supportive customers who were keen to help them through this difficult time. The hampers line has really taken off and will remain as a long-term fixture for the business.
Looking to the future, Dowdeswell Bar intends to showcase a brand new setup at the Batlle of Evesham (which we can’t wait to see). They also hope to continue growing the business to the point where someday they can hand it over to their eldest daughter to carry on.

Friends Of St Richard's Open Space
Charity Spotlight
Have you heard of the Friends of St Richard’s Open Space? They are a locally based community group working in collaboration with the council and local businesses to raise money for a new playground on the Fairfield Estate. The new playground will be located on the St Richard's Open Space (known locally as the Muddies) located off the Four Pools road, just up from the schools. Although Fairfield is certainly one of the largest estates in Evesham, it is the only one which does not have its own dedicated play facilities. Children in the estate currently have to travel out of the area to use other playgrounds, which often means crossing busy roads.
Work has already started in the Muddies to prepare for the new fully inclusive playground but funds are still needed which is why the group is holding its very own Summer Fete at the De Montfort School - a short distance away from the Muddies - on Saturday 19th August. The event offers free entry for families and there will be a whole host of activities, food and drink vendors and stallholders. For more details check out our event listing on the Facebook group and website or to donate please use the link below.

A 'mash' made in heaven as the Spudman takes on new home in Evesham
After a long residency of 34 years in Waterside Shopping Centre, this month, the Spudman of Evesham held a grand re-opening at their new premises on market square. It was quite the celebration attended by the major of Evesham who opened the store and was so successful that the Spudmen, father and son team Tom and Mick, actually ran out of spuds!
The team are very grateful for all the support they've received in moving to their new premises, claiming "we wouldn't be here without you".
The spud shop is open for takeaways only between 9.30am-4pm Monday through Saturday. You can also choose to take your spuds to The Red Lion and eat there as long as you buy a drink. The Spudman also has a lovely back room which is available as a function room - take a look at their Facebook page for more information and don't forget to check out their 'spud-tacular' spuds next time you are feeling peckish.

Local Landlord Tom Celebrates First Anniversary after taking over the Red Lion
Earlier this week, Tom Doggett celebrated the first anniversary of his taking over the Red Lion Pub in Evesham. The Red Lion is a fantastic traditional pub offering great locally sourced ales as well as a warm welcome and regular live music. The pub is also award-winning having been recognised by CAMRA under its New Landlord Achievements 2023 and by ourselves as Evesham Noticeboard's Business of the Year 2023.
To celebrate these successes and thier first anniversary, the pub arranged a very special evening with fantastic local food and drink and entertainment from local folk singers and morris dancers. The Red Lion truly embodies the spirit of supporting local businesses.
Cheers Tom!! Keep those pints flowing and the good times rolling! You're an awesome ambassador for our community and always #keepingitlocal!

Where's my nearest.... playground?
Who doesn't love a good playground?
We know that not everyone is aware of all the play facilities in Evesham so we've put together a list of all of Evesham's playgrounds with the location and details of each.
Why not set a challenge of visiting every single one over the summer. It will stop the kids getting bored, and better still our playgrounds are completely free!
