Evesham Volunteer Centre
Charity Spotlight
This month we cast our shiny spotlight on another local charity - Evesham Volunteer Centre. Evesham Volunteer Centre was set up 41 years ago with funding provided by adult services because it was felt that there was a need for a Community Car Scheme to help the local people get, principally, to hospital and medical appointments.
The goal of Evesham Volunteer Centre is to create a network of volunteers to help vulnerable people, particularly the elderly so that they can stay in their own homes and maintain as much independence as possible. In order to do this, the centre needs to recruit volunteers and provide them with advice and guidance so that they in turn can help those who are in need of help.
Since the centre opened 41 years ago:
- Over 10,000 volunteers have given their time.
- The centre has recruited over 900 volunteer drivers.
- Volunteers have donated approximately 1 million hours of their time.
- Plus 954 isolated people have been visited or telephoned by a befriender since 2003 when the befriending scheme was started.
Of course Evesham Volunteer Centre needs volunteers to run and are always looking for more volunteers to either help in-house or with the charities that they work with.
Volunteers Needed
Volunteer Drivers
One of the main schemes offered by Evesham Volunteer Centre is the community car scheme which is considered an essential service. The car scheme helps elderly and disabled people who are without transport. Under the scheme, drivers ensure that vulnerable people can go to medical appointments, do their shopping and socialise with other people to avoid them feeling isolated.
More volunteer drivers are needed and you can make a real difference to your community by giving your time to enable the elderly and disabled remain as independent as possible. How much time you give as a volunteer driver is entirely up to you and you'll receive 45p per mile in expenses.
Befrienders
Evesham Volunteer Centre's initiative - the POPI Project also needs volunteers. The project arranges home visits, telephone befriending, and hosts a monthly lunch club, catered for by Working World. The scheme is looking for more befrienders, who could spare some time for regular visits and contact with someone who is feeling socially isolated.
Fundraiser Wanted
Evesham Volunteer Centre is also looking for someone who could look for grants and organise fundraising activities so they can keep all their projects running. If this sounds like something you can help out with, please get in touch.
Volunteers Week
To celebrate Volunteers Week (1st – 7th June) the centre is having a coffee and cake morning on Friday, 7th June at their base in Brick Kiln Street from 10am till 1pm. It will be a great opportunity to chat to their team of volunteers, find out what they do and how to get involved.
If you'd like to become a volunteer you can contact please contact the centre on 01386 570530 or email co@eveshamvolunteers.org.uk
Santa's new charity to help all year round
Following their hugely successful fundraising efforts at the end of last year, local charitable organisation, 'Santa Saves Christmas' decided to expand their mission and help struggling families not only at Christmas but all year round.
The group, originally set up by Kyle Hotchkins, managed to raised over £27,000 in just 3 months at the end of the year, ensuring children received Christmas presents, families received christmas dinners, and for those that needed it there was also additional help towards household bills
Kyle and his elves, not content to just help for a few months each year, saw that there was a real need all year round for their help, so they have changed the charity's name to 'Claus for a Cause' and set up an officially registered charity so that as much money as possible can go where it needs to.
The team are continuing to grow awareness of 'Claus for a Cause' and need your support so please visit their Facebook page and follow them (if you are not already doing so). They're also organising further fundraisers throughout the year so if you'd like to help either by volunteering or by donating raffle prizes, please see their Facebook page for more details.
You can also take part in the regular Claus for a Cause lottery and be in with a chance of winning some cash whilst at the same time helping people in the local community.
Check out their Facebook page to see what else they have going on.
Warm spaces open up for Evesham residents
January saw some of our coldest temperatures for a while and with spring still a few months away, the chances are that we'll see at least one more cold snap before the warmer weather arrives. Unfortunately, with the rising cost of living, for some people this could mean the difference between paying for heating or eating.
To help residents in this situation, there are places in the community offering warm spaces. These are organisations where you can go to get warm, enjoy a hot drink and make some new friends too. For more details see below.

Time to declutter?
With the darker nights behind us, the days getting longer and temperatures rising, it's clear that spring is most definitely on its way. For some of you that might mean it's time for spring cleaning and some decluttering.

It was also a fantastic opportunity for local business owners to meet, make new connections and learn more about each other.
