A Spotlight on the Vale of Evesham NCT
In this month's newsletter, we shine our charity spotlight on local parenting charity, The Vale of Evesham NCT.
The Vale of Evesham NCT is our local branch of the National Childbirth Trust, the UK’s largest charity dedicated to supporting parents through pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. As part of a charity that’s been making a difference since 1956, the Evesham branch has been an active part of our community for over a decade, creating a supportive network for families in their earliest days and beyond.
On a local level, the Vale of Evesham NCT provides a welcoming environment for parents and children alike, with a range of weekly baby and toddler groups, first aid courses, and special seasonal events. The Vale of Evesham NCT also holds regular Nearly New Sales throughout the year with the next one coming up on Saturday, 16th November, at The De Montfort School (TDMS). These sales are a fantastic opportunity for parents to find quality baby and toddler items at affordable prices, with all proceeds supporting the charity’s work in the community.
One of the charity’s most meaningful initiatives is the Evesham NCT Baby Bundles service, which provides essential items to local families in need. The Baby Bundles service is one way that the Vale of Evesham NCT ensures no family is left behind, offering practical help and support when it’s most needed.
The Evesham community can get involved with the Vale of Evesham NCT in a variety of ways. Whether you’d like to share information about the charity’s services, volunteer at their groups or events, or simply help spread the word, there are many ways to lend a hand. If you have ideas on how NCT could further support local parents, they’re always open to feedback and eager to connect with the community.
If you’d like to learn more, get involved, or offer support, you can reach the team through Facebook Messenger at Evesham NCT, or email coordinator.valeofevesham@nct.org.uk. Together, let’s celebrate and support the incredible work they’re doing for families in Evesham.

A huge congratulations to the team behind Evesham Defibrillators who recently held their second annual charity fundraiser for the purchase and maintenance of Evesham's community defibrillators.
The team held a day of fundraising at Bengeworth social club with lots of stalls, activities, first aid demonstrations, and competitions for the public to take part in.
Due to their incredible efforts in the lead-up to the day and the day itself, they have confirmed they have raised a grand total of £2364 which is fantastic.
A massive well done to the team and everyone involved and on behalf of the community, thank you to everyone that donated or attended. The funds raised will go towards the ongoing maintenance of the existing defibrillators.

Wychavon announces dates for festive bin collections
This is one for your December calendars so you might want to save this for later.
Wychavon District Council have now announced the refuse collection dates for the festive period. You can also put out an additional bag of rubbish and recycling between Saturday 21st December and Friday 10th January and it will be collected on your bin collection day.
If you are a garden waste customer, you can also use your collection for disposal of your real Christmas Tree - just cut the branches down to short lengths of no more than 4ft so they will fit in the bin.

Ask the Expert:
How to Care for Your Plants in Winter
This month, we reached out to Lisa from Fleurs of Evesham, our local florist and plant care expert, to get her advice on keeping houseplants healthy during the colder months. Here’s what she had to say about one of her favourite low-maintenance plants:
Spotlight on: Mother-in-Law’s Tongue (aka Snake Plant)
Looking for a plant that thrives with minimal effort? The Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, also known as Dracaena trifasciata or the Snake Plant, is a hardy houseplant that’s perfect for winter—and here’s why.
Caring for Your Snake Plant
- Watering: Less is more! This plant thrives in dry soil, so be sure to let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering, especially in winter, can be harmful. When you do water, aim for the soil only, keeping the leaves and the rosette (the center of the plant) dry.
- Light: Snake Plants adapt to most light conditions, including low light, making them perfect for nearly any room. If you’re moving your plant from low light to a brighter spot, do so gradually to avoid bleaching the leaves.
- Bonus Tip: These plants are nearly indestructible, making them great for beginners or anyone with a busy lifestyle!
Fun Fact
Did you know that the Snake Plant is one of the most effective air-purifying plants? According to a NASA study, it can absorb over 100 pollutants and tackle major toxins like formaldehyde and benzene, making it a great choice for cleaner, healthier air indoors.
Why the Name?
The nickname “Mother-in-Law’s Tongue” comes from the plant’s pointed leaf tips, which are said to resemble a sharp tongue—a humorous nod to the stereotype!
Whether you’re looking to brighten your home, purify your air, or simply enjoy a beautiful and easy-to-care-for plant, the Snake Plant is a winter winner. Snake plants are available from Fleurs of Evesham for £11.00 each with Christmas plant pots available to buy as an add-on making these the perfect Christmas gift. Why not pop in for a visit to their location in Merstow Green or alternatively give them a follow on Facebook.

Meet Jason Ayres: Our New Podcast Host and Storyteller Extraordinaire
We’re excited to welcome Jason Ayres as the new host of our community podcast!
Jason is a talented author with an impressive twenty books to his name, but his passion for storytelling started long before he turned writing into a career. At just eight years old, he was filling exercise books with epic space adventures, casting himself as “Captain Jason” and borrowing heavily from Star Trek. Writing stuck with him through his school years, a career in marketing, and even as a side passion, contributing satirical pieces to newsletters and writing a weekly column for the Oxford Mail. In 2014, he decided to "take the leap" into writing full-time, and he hasn’t looked back since.
Now, alongside his writing, Jason is diving into hosting our podcast. A long-time fan of podcasts, Jason has even hosted his own in the past and loved the experience. He’s excited to use this opportunity to connect with the local community, showcase fascinating people and organizations, and bring a fresh perspective to the show. “Being an author can be quite isolating,” Jason shared, “so this is a great chance to meet people and hear their stories.”
Jason already has plenty of ideas for future episodes and is particularly looking forward to highlighting lesser-known groups in the area, such as charities working with bats and reptiles. These unique stories are just the kind of thing he’s excited to explore and share with listeners.
When asked about a dream guest for the podcast, Jason didn’t hesitate: John Wyndham, the legendary author of Day of the Triffids and The Midwich Cuckoos. Jason grew up reading Wyndham’s work and would have loved to ask him about his process for creating such believable, thought-provoking stories.
Jason’s vision for the podcast is simple: a fun and informal space where guests can share what they do, how they got there, and how they’re making a difference in the community. Whether it’s a local entrepreneur, a charity, or an event organizer, Jason wants to celebrate the people who make this area so special.
You can connect with Jason at jason.ayres@btinternet.com or through the Evesham Noticeboard. He’s also got big things happening on the writing front, with the release of Closing Time, the final book in his 15-part Time Bubble series, coming on November 30th. After that, he’ll dive into his next project, revisiting the 1980s through a time-travel adventure series that lets him relive the decade he grew up in.
We’re thrilled to have Jason on board and can’t wait for you to hear what he has planned for the podcast. Stay tuned—it’s going to be an exciting journey!
