Travel back in time and witness history come alive at the award-winning Battle of Evesham Festival! Held annually on the first weekend of August (this year on 3rd & 4th August 2024), this free festival is now in its 15th year and has become a giant in the historical re-enactment scene, attracting tens of thousands of visitors from across Europe.
Not only is it a fun and engaging experience for the whole family, but it's also recognised as one of the biggest and most spectacular medieval re-enactment festivals in Europe. With hundreds of re-enactors participating in exhilarating battle scenes and living history displays, the festival offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and immerse yourself in 13th-century England.
The Battle of Evesham Festival commemorates a pivotal clash in English history, the Battle of Evesham, which took place on 4th August 1265. This battle marked the culmination of the Second Barons' War, a power struggle between King Henry III and a group of rebellious barons led by Simon de Montfort.
Leading up to the battle, tensions had been simmering for years. King Henry III, perceived as a weak ruler, heavily relied on foreigners for advisors and positions of power. This angered the barons, who felt their influence was waning. In 1258, they forced the king to accept the Provisions of Oxford, a set of reforms limiting his power.
Simon de Montfort, a powerful earl, emerged as the leader of the rebel barons. He initially supported the king but later sided with the barons, eventually capturing the king and his son, Prince Edward, at the Battle of Lewes in 1264. Montfort effectively ruled England for a short period, attempting to establish a more representative parliament.
However, Prince Edward escaped captivity and rallied a royalist army. The two forces met near Evesham. Montfort's smaller, less disciplined army was caught off guard by Prince Edward's innovative tactics and ultimately defeated. De Montfort himself was killed in the battle, and the rebellion was crushed.
The Battle of Evesham marked a turning point in English history. Royal power was restored, and the dream of a more limited monarchy faded. However, the battle also highlighted the importance of parliament and the rights of the nobility. While the festival celebrates the re-enactment, the echoes of the battle continue to this day as they helped pave the way towards a more representative government.
